Just Deserts

That cluster of buildings at the bottom of the hills in the picture above, is the Nevada State Prison at Jean, NV.   Without a doubt, even though brand-new, this has to be one of the most depressing prisons in the entire US.   Why?

Because it is uphill from this, the Goldstrike Casino.   Can you imagine the psychological torture?   As a prisoner, your occasional view of the outside world includes a panorama of legally-sanctioned vice.   Truly karmic.

Perhaps this is a splendid bit of geographical luck and psychological conditioning by the *casino* -- "look over there: debtor's prison - you better keep pulling that lever and rolling the dice"

Seems like a motivational factor to turn ones life around and stay out of prison.

Every now and then when your life gets complicated and the weasels start closing in, the only cure is to load up on heinous chemicals and then drive like a bastard from Hollywood to Las Vegas ... with the music at top volume and at least a pint of ether.

-Hunter S. Thompson

Dedicated to the other side of Las Vegas, namely; the sprawling, mad, incoherent underpinnings of the world's favorite destination.

That, and the occasional ranting about nothing in particular.
